So, you've chosen the beauty and practicality of Duradek vinyl decking for your outdoor oasis. But how exactly does this transformation occur? Let's delve into the meticulous process of Duradek installation, ensuring your deck achieves both stunning aesthetics and exceptional performance:

Assessment and Preparation: The Foundation for Success

Before the magic of Duradek unfolds, a thorough assessment of your existing deck is crucial. Here's what you can expect:

  • Inspection: Certified Duradek installers will meticulously evaluate your deck's structure, taking note of the current slope, dimensions, and any special considerations (outlets, vents, etc). They'll also check for any existing damage that might need repair before installation.
  • Subfloor Prep: For optimal results, a smooth, structurally sound subfloor is essential. Proper water drainage is crucial for the longevity of your deck. Our installers place wood slope strips  across the deck surface, ensuring water flows freely and doesn't pool on the deck surface. They're typically spaced 16 inches apart and placed directly over the existing deck boards. Then, a layer of  3/4 inch thick Select Fir Tongue and Groove (T&G) plywood. This creates a clean, even surface and provides a strong foundation for the Duradek system.
  • Surface Prep and Sanding: Once the plywood subdeck is installed, our meticulous installers fill any gaps or imperfections with special deck mud. This creates a seamless surface for optimal Duradek adhesion. The mudded surface is then sanded smooth to ensure a perfect finish.

Laying the Groundwork: Membrane Application

Once the subfloor is prepped, the installation gets underway:

  • PVC Drip Edge: A PVC drip edge is meticulously installed along the perimeter of the deck. This crucial component ensures proper water drainage, preventing moisture from accumulating underneath the vinyl membrane.
  • The Power of Glue: A specially formulated adhesive is applied generously to both the subfloor and the underside of the Duradek membrane. This creates a strong, long-lasting bond, securing the vinyl in place.
  • Laying the membrane: Installers roll Duradek sheets directly onto the deck surface. The vinyl membrane is also glued vertically up the wall and is designed to go beneath the water vapor barrier of the home for complete protection.

Seamless Perfection: Welding and Finishing Touches

Now comes the artistry of creating a watertight and visually unified deck surface:

  • Heat Welding Seams: Duradek sheets are overlapped strategically. Expert installers use hot air welding equipment to seamlessly fuse these overlaps, creating a waterproof barrier.
  • Trim and Flashing: Custom-cut vinyl pieces are meticulously installed to provide a clean finish around edges, posts, and other deck features. This ensures a polished look and reinforces water protection.

Bringing it All Together: Railings and Finishing Details

The final touches complete your dream deck:

  • Railing Installation: Rails are expertly attached to the deck using fasteners specifically designed for vinyl decking. This ensures a secure and waterproof connection while maintaining the deck's aesthetics.
  • Wrapping Pillars: Pillars and other vertical elements are wrapped in vinyl using custom-cut pieces and specialized techniques. This creates a cohesive look and further enhances the deck's water-tight seal.
  • Off-Gassing – A Vital Step: After the deck membrane is installed, a brief off-gasing period allows any trapped solvents to evaporate. During this time, bubbles may appear on the deck surface, but they typically disappear after a few weeks.

A Final Inspection: Ensuring Perfection

Once the installation is complete, certified Duradek installers will perform a  thorough inspection. They'll meticulously check every detail, ensuring the deck meets all safety and waterproofing standards.

Why Choose Certified Duradek Installers?

While the process might seem straightforward,  Duradek installation is a specialized skill.  Certified installers possess the extensive training, experience, and specialized tools necessary to ensure a flawless and long-lasting installation.
